Tai Chi Plus + is the practical easy to learn essence of Tai Chi, yoga, psychology and riding exercises blended into a set of skills for dealing with every day life in the modern world.
We are living for far longer and dealing with a pace of change that our grand parents could never have even imagined. Age old wisdoms presented in a modern simple way will show you the door to a greater agility and brighter outlook.
The back bone of Tai Chi is all about balance. When we get into a balanced pattern in our lives things just seem to flow or we see a well balanced performance of anything from ice skating to show jumping there is a rightness about it.
A significant part of maintaining or improving our agility well into late old age is to regularly practice balance exercises. It could be still being able to get over a style on a walk in our beautiful Dorset countryside or not slipping on ice and avoiding a broken hip, the sure footed ness that comes from improved balance is worth it’s weight in gold.
The name of a sequence of karate moves that I preformed for my black belt many moons ago, is translated in some schools as Crane on a rock. The effortless stillness of an elegant bird perched unmoving on one leg has to be the ultimate picture in control and balance.
Just trying to stand on one leg for a minute or two is a way of clearing your mind and relaxing. To stay upright requires you to fully focus on what you are doing, that means no thoughts about the past or worries about the future, it means being fully in the present moment.
Children are very good at living fully in the present moment. Can you remember how as a child just walking along a narrow wall without falling was,for the time that you were doing it, the most important and exciting thing in the world?
In order to stand comfortably on one leg your posture has to be pretty good. A significant part of Tai Chi Plus + is about improving your posture which goes hand in hand with improved breathing. There is nothing better than being able to breath comfortably and fully and there is nothing worse than not being able to, the saying to breath well is to live well is very true.
By training in some simple breathing techniques you will be more relaxed, have more energy and have greater control of your emotions. It could be that you find yourself using your better breathing a minute before a painful injection for a medical condition or when faced with a fearful situation. A friend told me that when he was on a ferry going to the Shetland Islands in extreme weather he used the breathing exercises from Tai Chi Plus + to fend off sea sickness. While the chap that he was traveling with emptied the contents of his stomach on the deck, my friend smugly rode the storm.
Another important component of Tai Chi Plus + is to regularly put all the major joints in your body through their full range of movements in a controlled manner. Working on the old adage use it or loose it, this will maintain and improve your range of movement and these exercises do become a pleasure to do.
A lot of this material comes from various martial arts that I have studied and taught professionally for forty years. The martial attitude to life,as we advance in years, can in itself be a huge plus. We all have our cross to bear, we all have our battles to fight and in this attitude is all!
Be a worrier or be a warrior is a saying well worth remembering, you don’t have to be Japanese to have some Samurai spirit to call upon when you need it. By regular practice of these time less disciplines you can loose some of your years and have a spring in your step for many more years to come.
