Tai Chi in the work place.
The best of jobs can be stressful at times and it’s easy to get tense and not even notice. By taking a break and loosening your body through Tai Chi you can learn to relax physically and mentally refresh yourself. Initially you can learn a simple but very effective Tai Chi routine with a group of your colleagues in the work place. Having learnt some basics you can put them into practice when it suites you and experience for yourself some work enhancing tranquility.
Get up and stretch.
Even with the best planned seating in the world staring transfixed at a screen for endless hours is never going to be a natural thing to do. By occasionally getting up and loosening up, paying attention to your posture and becoming very calm, you can get a healthy balance even on the longest and most pressurised of work days. If you work at home you could take the dog out a couple of times as a welcome change but even in the work place doing some Tai Chi can have a positive effect in the same amount of time that a coworker takes for a cigarette break.
Ease your discomfort.
It could be a stiff neck, bad back or shoulder most of us at some point will have an injury or health problem that is made worse by a long working day. By learning the Tai Chi loosening exercises and practicing a couple that help your particular problem for a few minutes several times a day there is a good chance that you can ease your discomfort.
I once taught these techniques to a cook who had a busy cafe, he was still doing them eight years later and probably still is as every time he got out of the habit his back pain would return. If you are stood on your feet for endless hours every day the posture training in Tai Chi can make a huge difference to you.
Employers have a duty under the Health and Safety at Work Act of 1974 to ensure the health safety and welfare of their employees. Many forward looking companies have introduced well being initiatives and fully realise that happy healthy staff take less days off through illness. Tai Chi can lift your mood, boost self esteem, improve sleep quality and energy levels. By providing a series of Tai Chi lessons in the work place or even slotting in a one off session on a training day an employer is taking steps to for fill their obligations in a practical and cost effective way. If your attending a full day seminar, listening to various speakers, being led through some exercises and learning something new can be a refreshing change.
Tai Chi reduces stress.
Regular practice of Tai Chi does reduce stress. Stress is the adverse reaction that people have to excessive pressure or other demands being put on them. Stress can cause depression anxiety and is behind one in five visits to GPs. Stress can cause unhealthy behaviour such as smoking or drinking too much, either of which can lead to other health problems. Good stress management in the work place is vital to anyone’s overall health.
Until recent times most work was manual and the idea of health clubs would have seemed crazy. For many of us today the only physical exercise that we get from our job is walking from the car park into the office. Tai Chi is a form of exercise that doesn’t make you breath heavily, it requires no change of clothes, shower afterwards or any special equipment. A Tai Chi session can be adapted to the space that you have available at work.
If you would like to have some Tai Chi sessions taught in your work place and can interest some of your coworkers I am available for taster sessions. I have been teaching Tai Chi for twenty years and heavily involved in several martial arts for the last forty years. I am happy to share my knowledge and experience of this life enhancing art.
